UG event series - Where is the UK-EU security relationship heading?

This session will explore the different security dimensions within the UK-EU security relationship post-Brexit, including both internal and external security. Although the UK was always an important security actor within the EU, Brexit has resulted in reduced internal security cooperation, in areas such as drug trafficking or trafficking in human beings, and in an absence of formalised cooperation in foreign affairs and defence. Bearing the current situation in mind, what has been the impact of Brexit for UK and EU security? And how is the relationship expected to evolve in the next few years?  

Speakers

Helena Farrand Carrapico is Professor of International Relations and European Politics, as well as Jean Monnet Chair at Northumbria University. Her research is centrally concerned with addressing how internal security concerns, such as cyber crime and organised crime, are constructed, represented, and responded to by different actors, as well as how those responses impact society at large. She has an important publication track record in this field, which has been funded by the European Commission, the ESRC, the British Academy, the Royal Society, and national governments.

Richard Whitman is Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. His current research interests include the external relations and foreign and security and defence policies of the UK and the EU. He is an ESRC Senior Fellow on its UK in a Changing Europe initiative and leading a project on Securing Global Britain: Building and sustaining plurilateral practices of security cooperation in Europe. Professor Whitman is also a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI and an Academic Fellow at the European Policy Centre. Professor Whitman is a regular media commentator, working with print and broadcast media at home and overseas
