This event has been made free to all in solidarity with colleagues affected by the recent events in Turkey and Syria.
This event hosts three speakers to examine Turkey’s ad-hoc transitional justice initiatives in the Kurdish conflict and to discuss the prospect for TJ in light of recent political developments and the recent devastating earthquake. Ahead of the general and presidential elections in May 2023, Turkey is on the brink of change. As the AKP government intensifies its authoritarian regime, public and political discourse have focused on a pending transitional process amidst malfunctioning legal and government institutions which were proved again in the course of the earthquake and the state’s disaster response. Whether or not the upcoming elections in May 2023 will lead to a regime change, recent developments signal that it is even more important to ponder the prospect for dealing with the past in Turkey.
Our speakers who run the #TJUpdatesFromTurkey newsletter at the DEMOS Research Association will share their insights and analysis that re-frame the country’s past and present from a TJ perspective:
Dr Nisan Alıcı, Nottingham Trent University & University of Cambridge
Güneş Daşlı, Jena Center for Reconciliation (JCRS)
Güley Bor, Lawyer & Researcher
The event will be chaired by Dr Bahar Baser from Durham University’s School of Government and International Affairs.
Registration will close two hours before the event begins.
