Call for papers: European Security Working Group 8th annual workshop - European security cooperation in times of European and global elections
The eighth workshop of the BISA European Security Working Group comes at an extremely salient time for European security cooperation. 2024 saw noteworthy developments: there were elections in important countries for European security cooperation such as France and the UK, NATO allies selected a new Secretary General, and the European parliament has recently elected the president of the European commission for a second mandate. By the time the workshop will take place, a new US President will be in the White House following the United States presidential election. These changes come on the back of multiple crises such as Covid-19, the Russian-Ukrainian war and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Is it time for renewed optimism or for more of the same in European security?
We are looking forward to discussing themes and issues stemming from the above with scholars at all stages of their career who have an interest, broadly defined, in European security.
We are therefore keen to have paper contributions in - but not limited to – the following areas:
-
Theorising and conceptualising security cooperation.
-
The opportunities and challenges facing the new NATO security General.
-
Challenges to European security in the 21st century.
-
Possible effects of the US election upon European security cooperation
-
Possible effects of the French and British elections upon European security cooperation.
-
Cooperation, competition and compatibility of multilateral security organisations and initiatives.
-
Risks and dangers of artificial intelligence upon European security.
-
Views of European security from other regions of the world and debates over Europe's role beyond Europe.
The workshop will be held at the University of Plymouth, Plymouth (UK) on Friday 17 January. The event will be held in hybrid format, so will be accessible virtually as well as in person. Please note that BISA charges a small fee for non-members to attend working group events (including this workshop). A small number of travel bursaries will be available to PhD students and Early Career Researchers who wish to attend the event in person.
Paper abstracts (maximum 150 words) should be submitted to eswg.group@bisa.ac.uk by Saturday 30 November at 5pm.
Please get in touch if you have any questions concerning the workshop.
