Scholars in conversation: Cerwyn Moore and Nir Arielli on foreign fighters

The Political Violence, Conflict, and Transnational Activism (PVCTA) Working Group is delighted to invite you to the latest event of an online series of discussions on emerging and topical research themes. At this event, Dr Cerwyn Moore and Dr Nir Ariellii will talk about their work on ‘foreign fighters,’ examining how they are defined and understood in the literature, exploring the historical context behind transnational mobilisation, and discussing some of the key themes and ideas that have emerged from their own research.

Speakers

Dr Cerwyn Moore is a senior lecturer in International Relations at the University of Birmingham. He teaches and writes on terrorism and insurgency linked to the North Caucasus, particularly suicide attacks, foreign fighters and mass hostage-taking and the role of Islam. He also teaches and writes on interpretive approaches to International Relations, with a specific interest in narratives, hermeneutics, aesthetics and continental international political thought.

Dr Nir Arielli is Associate Professor of International History at the University of Leeds. His research to date has focused on the human history of the Dead Sea; the history of foreign war volunteering and foreign fighters; transnational military mobilization from the French Revolution to the present; pre-1948 Palestine and the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict; and the foreign and colonial policies of Fascist Italy.
