UG event series: What work is gender doing in Russia's war in Ukraine
This session will explore the role of gender in Russia’s war in Ukraine. Students will be invited to reflect on their own impressions of the gendered nature of this war and wars more generally throughout the session. The session will, first, examine how gender shapes the ways that the Russian and Ukrainian governments present their core values and define their societies to audiences at home and to their allies and potential supporters in the international community. Second, it will consider how ideas about gender determine who fights and who is a civilian. Finally, the session will investigate how gender is shaping plans for Ukraine’s post-conflict reconstruction.
This session will be led by Dr Jenny Mathers, a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at Aberystwyth University. Jenny’s research expertise lies at the intersection of Russian security and politics with gender and conflict. She is frequently invited by the UK and international media to provide commentary on Russia’s war in Ukraine and is writing a book that examines the conflict from the perspective of feminist security studies.
Registration will close two hours before the event begins
