IR Career Starters - August 2023

This month's edition again includes IR-related podcast recommendations.
With the holiday season kicking off, we usually do not see extensive opportunities appearing in these crucial months, but 2023 is by no means a disappointment regarding relevant and exciting opportunities.
With many fresh graduates settling into a competitive and, quite frankly, tough job market, I can only reiterate the advice I give every single time I am out giving career lectures; be patient and mentally prepare for the long haul.
The sad truth is that the IR domain (and its countless subdomains) are faced with incredible competition and challenges.
An oversaturation of graduates in IR and its many subsets has flooded the market, coupled with tightening budgets in the diplomatic services, IOs, and crucial aid and development budgets, meaning there are not enough positions to go around. It also means that when positions are listed, you will face stiffer competition than you should be due to overqualified candidates competing against you for the positions; most organisations aim directly to fill early career positions with early career professionals, but most are not all.
At the same time, this is a particularly demanding domain of individuals, so comprehensive competition for just a chance to secure a career position is the norm; this makes it quite arduous and, at times, incredibly frustrating to get the door kicked in.
I know it is tough, so I help guide articles, tips and tricks and relevant opportunities. Still, I rely heavily on your input to determine what concrete challenges you face and could use further insights!

The rapprochement between Saudi-Arabian and Iran in March was a remarkable event by itself but made even more impact on the international scene due to Chinaβs prominent role in this diplomatic achievement. This episode gives a good impression on how the increasing political reach of China is perceived, with a focus on the perspective of the USA. Understanding that dynamic is relevant and important as China seems to ramp up its diplomatic efforts in Ukraine in a similar manner.
