Event Summary: Publishing Your First Research Article

In April, we hosted a practical and insightful workshop titled ‘Publishing Your First Research Article’. The event was led by Professor Maria Mälksoo (University of Copenhagen), Associate Editor of Review of International Studies and editorial board member of European Journal of International Relations, Global Studies Quarterly, Journal of Genocide Research, and International Political Anthropology. Designed for PhD students and early career researchers, the session aimed to unpack the often opaque and daunting world of academic publishing.
The workshop broke the publishing process down into clear, manageable stages. From foundational writing habits to strategic publishing decisions, Professor Mälksoo offered participants actionable guidance and an honest look behind the scenes of scholarly journals. She began by outlining the behavioural foundations that underpin successful academic writing. Practical advice included scheduling short, regular writing sessions, setting realistic goals, and maintaining a writing journal – emphasising that the journey to publication begins long before a manuscript is submitted.
Participants were also encouraged to develop a clear publishing strategy during their doctoral studies. Professor Mälksoo explored how to structure a paper effectively from the outset, with tips on writing strong outlines, crafting suitable and appealing titles, and framing introductions to set out the rationale, pose an engaging puzzle, and guide the reader through the rest of the article.
A significant focus of the session was identifying the right ‘home’ for one’s research. This involved a detailed discussion on choosing between generalist and specialist journals, assessing editorial boards, closely reading journal remits, and being alert to ‘predatory’ publishers. Professor Mälksoo emphasised the importance of writing with a clear audience in mind (not just for a specific journal) and thinking strategically about where and why to submit.
She also provided valuable insight into the mechanics of publishing in leading journals, using Review of International Studies as a case study. Attendees gained a realistic understanding of submission and review timelines, desk rejection rates and their typical causes, and how best to navigate the editorial process.
Finally, the session highlighted the value of peer networks throughout the writing and publishing journey. Whether for reviewing abstracts, sense-checking early ideas, or offering honest feedback, cultivating a supportive academic community was shown to be vital. Professor Mälksoo also addressed the often-unspoken reality of rejection in publishing, offering constructive, reassuring advice on how to respond, revise, and persist.
A sincere thank you to all who joined this energising and generously shared session!
