Last month we ran elections for the new PGN committee. We’re delighted to announce the results and introduce you to the new team who will take up their positions in September.

Thank you to everyone who ran for election and to all those who voted.

Charlie Price - Communications Officer

Charlie is a PhD candidate heading into second year in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick. He previously undertook degrees in Politics and International Studies, International Security, and Social Science Research all at the University of Warwick.

Charlie said:

“My research looks at anti-migrant activism in the UK and Finland through a framework of ontological security. I am interested anti-migrant activism as an informal bordering practice, which is something that I feel warrants greater consideration in the field of border studies. I am broadly interested in issues related to IR and International Security, and I spent part of my first year as an associate tutor on an undergraduate security studies module.”

“Prior to beginning my PhD I worked in an advertising agency in Berlin, hopefully this will be useful when it comes to managing communications for the BISA PGN! I’m looking forward to this new role and am excited to meet those involved with BISA and the PGN.”

Mariah Loukou - Elections and Funding Officer

Mariah is a higher education professional with extensive experience of working in student-facing, academic quality support, governance and policy development roles. Specifically, she has held positions as Governance Administrator, Quality Administrator and Graduate School Administrator. She has previously supported the College Secretary by looking after Senate and Senate-related business. In her current role as Research and Enterprise Policy Officer, Mariah is managing research and enterprise processes and develops new policies with the more recent examples being the Intellectual Property policy and the Conflict of Interest policy.

Mariah completed her Master’s degree in Intelligence and International Security from the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. She is currently completing her PhD in Critical Military Studies at City, University of London, where she is examining whether the U.S. armed forces can be transformed by tackling hegemonic masculinities through the female approach.

Joshua Barritt – Events Officer

Joshua is a PhD Researcher and Graduate Teaching Assistant in Politics at the University of Manchester. His research interests centre on environmental politics and policy. He is particularly interested in ocean governance and marine biodiversity conservation policy. His PhD analyses how policymakers are developing and implementing policies as a response to the effects of climate change on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Usually the PGN Vice-Chair would also take over as Chair in September, however current Vice-Chair Joanna Wilson (University of Glasgow) is currently on maternity leave. She will take up her position as Chair in Spring 2021. Current Chair Tom Vaughan (Aberystwyth) has kindly agreed to stay on until December.

The next PGN event will be a roundtable taking place in early October. Look out for more details soon.
