Contemporary Research on International Political Theory postgraduate masterclass: theorising the global right

This event will be in Zoom
-

Across the globe, radical conservative political parties, transnational movements, and ideas are influencing and even transforming the landscape of international politics. While it is common to see them as disparate “populist” or nationalist reactions to globalisation, these forces also have substantive and significant theoretical underpinnings. As Matthew Rose has put it, the radical right “is not stupid; it is deep. Its ideas are not ridiculous; they are serious.” This masterclass examines the international political theory of the ‘global right’ and the challenges it presents for international theory and International Relations.

Ahead of the masterclass, participants are expected to read the following two texts:

- Drolet, Jean-François, and Michael C. Williams. 2022. “From Critique to Reaction: The New Right, Critical Theory and International Relations.” Journal of International Political Theory 18, no. 1: 23-45. Open Access.

- Drolet, Jean-François, and Michael C. Williams. 2021. “The Radical Right, Realism, and the Politics of Conservatism in Postwar International Thought.” Review of International Studies 47, no.3: 272-293.

Participants are also requested to send in advance 1-2 questions regarding the two texts that can serve as the basis for discussion. Please send the question(s) by Monday 7 April  at 5pm (GMT) to cript.group@bisa.ac.uk with the subject title “CRIPT masterclass questions”, also including your name in the body of the email so that the instructors might call on you during the masterclass to raise your question.

Instructors:

Jean-François Drolet (QMUL) and Michael C. Williams (uOttawa)

This masterclass is open to interested MA and PhD students.

Registration will close two hours before the event begins.
