The label of ‘terrorism’ and the permissibility of violence

3-4 September 2024, The University of Sheffield

This year’s annual conference is centred on the theme of settler colonial violence and those violences made permissible through the framing of ‘terrorism’. This further invites a focus on the ongoing and current settler colonial violence in Gaza which has been described as a plausible genocide by the ICJ. Internationally, a broad application of the term ‘terrorism’ is currently being used to curtail freedoms of speech, expressions of solidarity, and the right to protest, confirming previous warnings by the UN Special Rapporteur on Counter Terrorism and Human Rights. In light of this, we encourage submissions which pay special attention to Palestine, the discursive power of the category ‘terrorism’, and the violence it permits in response to it throughout this annual conference.

Papers may cover but are not limited to the following themes:

  • Palestine, Zionism, Settler-colonial violence
  • Omissions, silences, oversights in Critical Studies on Terrorism
  • Colonial framings of violence, colonial functions of terrorism discourses
  • Nationalist and independence movements
  • Resistance, revolt, and liberation
  • The creation of suspect communities

We welcome submissions in the following formats:

  • Research papers
  • Panels (should be 4 papers ideally with a chair and discussant proposed)
  • Roundtables
  • Doctoral project presentations (For PGRs at early stages of their PhD)
  • Creative engagements with the subject matter such as spoken word, brief reflections, visual art etc.

Please send your abstract to cst.group@bisa.ac.uk by 5pm on 19 July 2024.

Accessibility: We will provide bursaries for Palestinian scholars and those PhD researchers who do not have access to other sources of funding.
