Statement from the Russian and Eurasian Security Working Group
As conveners of the RES Working Group, we unequivocally condemn Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. This unprovoked aggression, which includes the targeting of civilians, has resulted in a tragic loss of life, widespread destruction, and a profound humanitarian and environmental crisis, impacting millions of innocent civilians.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who have shown remarkable resilience and courage in the face of this brutal invasion. The actions of the Russian government are a blatant violation of international law, undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Such actions destabilize the region and pose a grave threat to global peace and security.
Furthermore, we extend our unwavering support to academics and researchers from Ukraine. The pursuit of knowledge and truth must continue even in times of conflict. Ukrainian academics and researchers have shown incredible determination in maintaining their work under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. We pledge to support their efforts by facilitating collaborations, providing resources, and advocating for their safety and autonomy.
Similarly, we recognize the bravery of Russian academics and researchers who have spoken out against the war. Despite facing severe repression, their commitment to academic freedom and integrity is commendable. We advocate to offer them support and solidarity, ensuring that their voices are heard and their contributions to global knowledge are valued.
We firmly oppose the vilification and exclusion of our Russian and Belarusian colleagues who are opposed to Russia’s imperialist war of aggression. Excluding individuals based solely on their citizenship contradicts our core principles of scholarship, open communication, and dialogue. Such measures risk harming those living under authoritarian regimes who are against the war. We urge all members of our community who oppose the war in Ukraine to unite in support of our students and colleagues.
Co-conveners,
RES Working Group
