Emotions in Politics and IR Working Group virtual reading group: 'The Affect Theory Reader 2' (Session 4)

We are hosting the fourth session of the Virtual Book Reading Group on 'The Affect Theory Reader 2: Worldings, Tensions, Futures’, edited by Gregory J. Seigworth and Carolyn Pedwell (Duke University Press, 2023). This recently published volume revisits conceptualizations of affect, addresses omissions (e.g., race, indigeneity, decoloniality), and explore the potentialities of affect studies by embracing diverse perspectives, critical debates, and various world-building approaches. Our fourth book reading session will feature talks by Ann Cvetkovich (Professor, the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation, Carleton University) and Nathan Snaza (Assistant Professor, Department of English, University of Richmond) on their chapters.

We will explore how affect is intertwined with writing and knowledge practices across the public and scholarly domains by engaging with feminist, queer, decolonial, critical race theory, and Black Thought. Ann Cvetkovich’s chapter, “Minor Feelings and the Affective Life of Race,” explores how creative nonfiction and other experimental genres of public writing address minor feelings of the racialized and queer ordinary. Nathan Snaza’s chapter “Why This? Affective Pedagogy in the Wake” discusses pedagogical orientation and what ‘wake work’ might entail by exploring his home institutions’ racialized histories. We strongly encourage participants to read both chapters in advance for discusssion.
