The Global Nuclear Order (GNO) Working Group of invites abstracts and panel submissions for its 2025 annual conference, taking place virtually on Friday 25 April 2025.

The theme for this year’s conference, 'Rethinking Nuclear Deterrence in an Era of Strategic Uncertainty', invites critical engagement with the evolving role of nuclear deterrence and its implications for global security, broadly defined. In light of shifting geopolitical and regional landscapes, emerging technologies, and renewed nuclear competition, we seek to explore how deterrence theory and practice intersect with broader political, ethical, and strategic concerns.

The GNO Annual Conference 2025 welcomes submissions that engage with this theme, including, but not limited to:

  • Theorising nuclear deterrence: classical, alternative, and critical perspectives
  • Great power strategic competition: escalation and crisis stability
  • The role of emerging technologies in nuclear deterrence
  • Deterrence and regional security.

One of the objectives of the GNO working group is to foster collaboration and networking opportunities for a new generation of researchers based in the UK and internationally. As such, we particularly encourage submissions from PhD candidates and early-career researchers working broadly on the theme of nuclear politics, particularly deterrence theory.

Please send your draft abstracts with an accompanying title (no more than 250 words) to gno.group@bisa.ac.uk no later than 5pm UK time on Friday 14 March 2025.

The Global Nuclear Order Working Group was founded to bring together a diverse range of scholars and practitioners. We therefore welcome submissions from postgraduate students and those working on nuclear issues in other disciplines and outside of academia.
