Subordinate no more? Brazil’s financial strategy in a polarised world
In the fifth session of the IPEG financialisation in Latin America webinar series, we will discuss Brazil’s renewed efforts to reform the international monetary and financial system under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s third term (2023–present). Dr Luiza Peruffo will examine the possibilities and limitations of Brazil’s de-dollarisation efforts, considering the broader US-China rivalry and China’s ambitions to expand the global use of the renminbi. This session will highlight the underlying hierarchy of the international monetary and financial system, the relationship between state power and money, and the subordinate position that countries like Brazil occupy within this structure.
